McAfee Stinger is a standalone virus removal tool designed to detect and clean specific stubborn viruses or unknown cyber threats from an infected computer. It’s a lightweight security tool for administrators and users with a simple set of features that include scanning the system for viruses on-demand and support removing of 600+ threats (including GameOver Zeus and CryptoLocker ransomware) at the ease of a click. Stinger is a specialized and limited virus removal utility that offers to remove specific known viruses, but it’s not a replacement for McAfee’s full anti-virus protection.
In the later versions, McAfee Labs Stinger bundles “McAfee Real Protect” (also known as “Mcafee Raptor”) – a McAfee’s innovation cloud-based threat intelligence service called Global Threat Intelligence (also known as “GTI”), that uses real-time behavior detection technology in order to identify suspected processes that exhibit malware behavior, and stop them before they harm it. The program is currently in the beta stage.
It constantly monitors suspicious activities on the computer for any cyber threats, without impacting user experience or PC performance. GTI leverages machine learning and automated behavioral classification systems in the cloud to detect zero-day malware.
By default, the application scans into locations where viruses and spyware are known to hide on the OS such as loaded modules, running processes, registry, and directory, and so on, to keep the scan times minimal.
The scanning areas can be fully customized for a reduced scan time by allowing the administrator to choose a drive or a directory that specifically needs to be scanned. It allows an administrator to view a real-time picture of total scanned files, the number of threats found, total scan time, and clean viruses. The program also sends any suspicions to quarantine to let the user decide whether to retain or remove the files.
Note: Most users should use the standard edition of McAfee Stinger, unless you are a McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (McAfee ePO) administrator, then you should use: Stinger-ePO. McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator is a comprehensive centralized security management software with automated management capabilities, saving IT administrators time and money. You should notice that rootkit scanning is disabled in the Stinger-ePO and also Real Protect is not enabled (in order to enable it you should execute the program using “Stinger.exe –ePO” parameter). The program requires the machine to have Internet Explorer 8 or above.Key Features:
- User-friendly interface
- Launch the tool immediately
- Scanning areas can be fully customized
- Suitable for all users
- Support removing of 600+ threats
- lightweight and does not affect PC speed
